Scripture:
“Therefore, to him who knows to do good and does not do it, to him it is sin.”
James 4:17 (NKJV)
Introduction:
As followers of Christ, we often find ourselves reflecting on the good that God desires from us. James 4:17 offers a powerful reminder that it's not enough to simply know what is right; we must also act on it. This scripture calls us to live with intention, recognizing that our actions matter.
Reflection:
In life, there are countless opportunities to do good. From small acts of kindness to standing up for justice, we have the privilege and responsibility to reflect God's love through our actions. But too often, we know the right thing to do and yet hesitate, choosing inaction over obedience. James warns us that failing to act on the good we know is not just a missed opportunity; it is sin.
This devotional invites us to reflect on the moments in our lives when we’ve known what we should do but chose not to. Are we living with purpose, actively seeking out opportunities to do good? God is constantly prompting us, but it’s up to us to answer that call.
Application:
1. Listen to God's Guidance:
Take time each day to listen to the Holy Spirit. We often feel nudges to act—whether it’s sending a text of encouragement, helping someone in need, or standing up for someone who cannot stand for themselves. When we pay attention to those promptings, we begin to align our lives with God’s will.
2. Reflect on Opportunities in Your Life:
Think about your daily life. Are there areas where you know you should do good, but have been putting it off? Whether it’s being kind to a co-worker, helping a neighbor, or even volunteering, reflect on how God may be calling you to act.
3. Commit to Action:
Commit to being a person of action. Start by looking for opportunities in your everyday life to serve others. Ask God for the strength and courage to follow through on the good He places before you. The more we practice obedience, the more natural it becomes to do good.
Prayer:
Lord, thank You for always guiding me and showing me the way to do good. Forgive me for the times I’ve missed opportunities to act on what I know is right. Help me live with a heart that desires to serve others and glorify You in everything I do. Give me the strength and courage to take action, knowing that You are always with me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Reflection Questions:
• Is there an area in my life where I’ve been hesitant to do good?
• How can I become more aware of the opportunities to serve others?
• What is one small action I can take today to do good?
Conclusion:
As Christians, our mission is to reflect Christ’s love in all that we do. James 4:17 serves as a reminder that doing good isn’t optional—it’s a command. Let's live with intentionality, embracing the opportunities to act on the good we know. When we step out in faith and follow God’s guidance, we become vessels of His love in a world that desperately needs it.
